Silliman College is seeking a residential college dean. The search will be completed during the 2022 Fall term with a start date as early as January or as late as the summer of 2023. Review of applications will begin October 3, 2022.

Position Focus

Every undergraduate student at Yale is assigned to one of fourteen distinctive and vibrant living communities called residential colleges. Every college houses a Head and a Dean who share responsibility for the operation of the college. Residential College Deans provide academic and personal counseling to undergraduates; administer and participate in residential college functions, including housing and extracurricular activities; serve on Yale College committees; and teach one or two courses per year. The Dean resides in an apartment within the college and has an office in the college. The dean must have an advanced degree and be qualified to teach courses in Yale College. The Residential College Dean is appointed for a three-year term which may be renewed given a favorable review at the end of the second year.

Additional Information About this Role

Residential college deans serve a number of important academic affairs and student life functions. College deans live in a residential college apartment and have a meal plan to encourage both formal and informal interactions with students, faculty and staff. First-year deans attend “dean school” (typically starting August 1), training for student first-year counselors and all orientation activities. Among other responsibilities and duties, college deans counsel students on a wide range of academic matters, including course selection and progress towards their degree; respond to faculty and families; and manage student emergencies. To help you decide whether to apply you may wish to review each college’s website to understand the variety of backgrounds current residential college deans have.
