Job Summary

Yale Summer Session (YSS) offers courses for Yale College credit in New Haven and online for Yale students, qualified undergraduate students from other colleges and universities, students about to enter their last year in high school, and adult learners. YSS also offers Yale faculty-led programs abroad for Yale College and visiting undergraduate students. Additional programs offered through Yale Summer Session include English language certificate programs, the Writers' Workshop, the Summer Drama Program, and reading courses for graduate students in foreign languages. YSS offers an on-campus summer residential experience for New Haven students.

The Dean of Summer Programs is responsible for all aspects of the summer school at Yale. This work includes planning curricula and course offerings with faculty and departments; directing application policies and admissions; overseeing a budget of about $15 million; marketing; and student advising and guidance for about 1,500 summer students. In addition, the Dean chairs the steering committee of the summer bridge program First Year Scholars at Yale, which is managed through YSS. The Dean of Summer Programs works not only with faculty and staff across Yale College but in collaboration with numerous colleagues and units across the University. The Dean  must be a strong educator with an understanding of the academic values of Yale, experience in building residential educational communities, and a capacity for innovation and imaginative program development.

Responsibilities

Academic Program Planning and Development

Work closely and collaboratively with Yale Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS) departments and programs and with faculty from the professional schools to develop and implement curricula and courses of the highest quality, in person and online; engage with Yale and non-Yale faculty and instructors to develop new courses that have the potential for high enrollments and represent cutting-edge scholarship; assess course effectiveness through course evaluations and surveys.

Working with the Director of Study Abroad, foster a broad range of faculty-led programs abroad to meet the curricular goals of departments and students.

Management of the Summer Session

Direct all aspects of enrollment management and the admissions process, including oversight of software development, website management, and oversight of all admissions processes and decisions, including those for international and high school students; oversee and direct the relationship with international institutions which send groups of students to study in YSS.

Oversee all aspects of the planning and implementation of a residential campus program for all YSS on-campus programs, including First Year Scholars at Yale.  This includes appointing and overseeing residential staff, and working in cooperation with the residential colleges, Yale Conferences and Events, and with many other offices in Yale College and other divisions.

Oversee the development and implementation of all policy and academic regulations for YSS; provide advising and support for students and support for faculty throughout their summer at Yale, fostering innovative programming and pedagogies to enhance learning and the residential experience; oversee additional mentoring of high school and visiting international students.

Financial and Budget Planning and Division Management

Develop and implement all aspects of financial and budgetary policy and procedure for Summer Session; ensure that all Yale University guidelines and policies are followed; manage expectations for revenue generation and growth; supervise the budget manager and all accounting processes; provide a formal annual report to the Dean of Yale College. 

Coordinate and oversee the work of YSS staff; in collaboration with other divisions of the Center for International and Professional Experience, pursue an energetic strategic planning and assessment agenda; participate actively in the life of Yale College, serving as an adviser to students and a member of committees as needed.
