Dear students,

If you belong to a student group — on or off campus — that is recruiting new members, or if you are joining a student group, be sure you understand Yale University’s Policy Against Hazing and the relevant federal and state laws that prohibit hazing. You can find the details from the secretary’s office.

Some of the key points:

  • Hazing includes activities that endanger physical or mental health, or that intimidate, denigrate, or humiliate potential or current members — or third parties who witness or are subject to those activities.
  • Blindfolding or physical restraint, even with someone's consent, is prohibited.
  • All student groups, whether registered or unregistered, are governed by Yale’s policy and by federal and state law. Student organizations include but are not limited to athletic clubs, varsity teams, fraternities, sororities, musical groups, junior and senior societies, drama groups, comedy groups, political groups, cultural houses, tour guides, student government organizations, and residential colleges.
  • Student groups, their officers, their responsible members, and participating individuals will be held accountable for hazing violations.

If you wish to report instances of hazing, please write to Charmayne Allen, Assistant Director of Student Affairs

Finally, please remember that the Yale College Community Care (YC³) staff is always available for support.

We know that student groups generally recruit members without violating rules on hazing, but because Yale College takes hazing violations seriously, it is essential that you be aware of this policy.

Sincerely,
