Yale College courses fall into four categories, each with its own kind of time pattern:

  • Lecture courses meet for 150 minutes a week, either in three 50-minute sessions or in two 75-minute sessions.
  • Seminars, which have limited enrollment in order to facilitate student participation, meet either in one 110-minute session or in two 75-minute sessions.
  • Studio courses meet in 110-minute sessions two or three times per week, in one 230-minute session per week, or in one 230-minute session and one 110-minute session; the studio format is limited to courses in Architecture, Art, Music, and Theater Studies.
  • Laboratories normally meet in one session per week for three or four hours in the afternoon

Classes in Yale College and in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences must follow these standard time patterns to assure, as far as is possible, that each class is taught in a suitable room. Because the supply of classrooms is limited, some classes scheduled to meet during times of high demand may be assigned to a marginal classroom.

Seminars

Seminars meet 150 minutes per week in two 75-minute sessions or 110 minutes per week in one session. Note that all seminars are understood to be limited enrollment (ordinarily fewer than 25 students).

Film Screenings

Evening film screenings should be scheduled to begin or end at 9 P.M. Competition for space is severe, and it is occasionally necessary to schedule two films in an evening. Exceptions are made for films running more than 2.5 hours.

The meeting day and time of a given course determines its placement in the final exam schedule. For additional information regarding Standard Meeting Times, please see the Yale Programs of Study.
