Immediate danger, call 911
If you are in immediate danger, call 911 or Yale Campus Police at +1 (203) 432-4400.
If you need immediate physical assistance, please contact your residential college head or dean.
If you or someone you know is in crisis, emergency services are available.
Student safety is a vital concern to every member of the Yale community. Should the emotional or physical safety of our students be compromised, we have robust resources in place for advocacy and support.
Please see the Public Safety website to review safety tips to ensure your on- and off-campus safety.
The Yale Police are also on campus and able to assist you. The Yale Police patrol the Yale campus and serve in a supportive role to the New Haven Police Department. Please review the campus boundary map (PDF). (If an accessible version of the map is required, please contact safe@yale.edu.)
Campus Blue Phones
More than 500 emergency phones are strategically located throughout the campus. At night, blue lights situated above or near the phones make them readily identifiable. The phones are equipped with red emergency buttons for direct connection to the Yale Police Department (YPD) for police, fire, or medical emergencies. Many of the phones have keypad for dialing any campus number.
LiveSafe
LiveSafe is a mobile app that gives students, staff, and faculty on campus an effective way to communicate with the YPD. LiveSafe also offers a campus safety map and escort services to any campus location.
- Download the app: LiveSafe for iPhone or LiveSafe for Android
- Report Tips: With a few taps on your phone, you can send tips about suspicious activity, theft, or any other campus concern directly to the YPD. You can attach images, video, or audio—all anonymously if you choose.
- Emergency Options: You can call or send messages directly to the YPD. Your name and current location will be attached to the call/text, enabling the YPD to better assist you.
- Safety Map: Find nearby safe spots and get directions to those areas. The YPD can also publish safety concerns directly to the safety map.
- Request a campus escort: Quickly and easily request a campus safety escort with the tap of a button.
- SafeWalk: If you’re walking alone in New Haven at night, you can invite friends and family to follow your location temporarily on a real-time map. SafeWalkers can also chat directly within the app or summon emergency help.
- Note on sharing your location with the YPD: Live Safe shares your location with the YPD (and no one else) only when you use the following features:
- Report Tips: A one-time location ping will be attached to any tip you submit, but your location will not be monitored.
- Emergency Options: Your location will be actively monitored until you tap “Stop Sharing Location.”
Shuttle Safe Rides & Walking Escort Service
New Haven is not an especially dangerous city but it is a city. Common sense and safety awareness are paramount considerations as you adjust to campus life. The Campus Shuttle is available to drive you to any location on campus at no cost even late into the night.
Reporting an Incident
Yale College has programs and policies in place to facilitate the ease with which our students might make a notification or complaint.
