Announcement - Asian American Cultural Center Director
September 26, 2017
To the Asian American Cultural Center Community,
We are delighted to announce the appointment of Joliana Yee, the new Director of the Asian American Cultural Center and Assistant Dean in Yale College. She will officially begin her role in January 2018.
Ms. Yee is coming to Yale from Loyola University, Chicago, where she is currently pursuing her Ph.D. in Higher Education. Her dissertation focuses on student affairs practices that develop the critical consciousness of Asian/Asian American college students. She currently also serves on the Directorate Board of the American College Personnel Association (ACPA) Commission for Social Justice Educators and as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Critical Scholarship on Higher Education and Student Affairs. Prior to her time at Loyola, Ms. Yee served as a Residence Hall Director at the University of Connecticut for four years.
Born and raised in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Ms. Yee is a first-generation college student who earned her B.A. in Economics and Political Science from Miami University (OH), and her M.S.Ed. in Higher Education and Student Affairs from Indiana University. Ms. Yee’s dedication to serving Asian/Asian American students and striving for social justice stems from her re-racialization experiences as an Asian international undergraduate. She is a strong advocate of a liberal arts education.
We thank the student, faculty and staff members of the search committee, who conducted a comprehensive, national search that attracted a strong pool of candidates. We are also extremely grateful to LiLi Johnson and Courtney Sato, who in their roles as interim directors oversaw the interviews and construction upgrades to the Center and who have provided outstanding leadership to the AACC’s communities during the past academic year. We would like to offer special thanks to Professor Mary Lui, Head of Timothy Dwight College, for her tremendous service as committee Chair and tireless commitment to the Yale student body and Asian community.
Ms. Yee hopes to visit campus a few times during the fall semester to begin her work with Sheraz Iqbal, the Assistant Director of the AACC who joined the Center in August 2017, and begin meeting with the student leaders who are so vital to the AACC’s success.
We hope you will join us in welcoming Ms. Yee to Yale, and we look forward to working with her full time in the spring semester.
