The chart below illustrates the most common paths for fulfilling the foreign language requirement. Additional paths and detailed information are in the Yale College Programs of Study. The chart below is for students for whom English was the language of instruction in secondary school. (If the language of instruction was not English, see NOTE below).
NOTE: Students whose secondary school transcript shows that the language of instruction was other than English may fulfill the foreign language requirement by successfully completing ENGL 114, 120, or 450. Alternatively, students in this category may fulfill the requirement by successfully completing instruction in a third language, neither English nor the language of their secondary school instruction, through the level designated L2.
